With her surgeon husband facing retirement, this married woman knew that they would soon be sharing much more fourth dimension together at dwelling house. And considering he loves to cook, most of that time would be spent in the kitchen. But the inefficient kitchen in their 15-year-onetime gimmicky-style business firm in Jacksonville, Florida, was not suitable for their new lifestyle. And so with a little compromise and a lot of aid from a designer and an architect, they set the phase with a grand new cooking and entertaining space congenital for two.
Prelude to a Programme

The new kitchen occupies the same 16- past-xviii-foot space as the old simply with an entirely redesigned layout. Overhead, the architect raised the eight-foot ceiling past ten feet, bringing it in line with the cathedral ceiling of the adjacent living room.
Nether this soaring canopy, a massive 121/ii-past-43/4-human foot rectangular isle with two integrated sinks on one side and counter seating on the other replaced a cramped foursquare one.
Corbin differentiated the eating and prep sides of the new island by positioning the work surface 6 inches lower and topping it with creamy, 1 1/ii-inch-thick solid surfacing. This like shooting fish in a barrel-care fabric absorbs audio, such as the clatter of utensils and dinnerware, better than the New Venetian Gold granite that covers the eating counter, opposite.
Lighting the Ready
Recessed tin can fixtures provide overall lite in the new kitchen and highlight the artwork hung high on the wall. Pendant lights illuminate the island, and under-cabinet task lighting brightens up the range. All of the lights are on dimmers.
Slim, drinking glass-front cabinets are lit from within and brandish the couple's glassware. Sometimes these modest lights are the only ones on in the house. "Now our quietly elegant kitchen has a warm, inviting glow," the wife says with please.
